"the operation carried out to stimulate the system is always the same, and yet the same response comes to every other shake"
With my 1970's electronics hat on, this is what I'd call a "flip-flop".
There is some theoretical minimum energy required to make a state transition. How do you know the external stimulus isn't providing this? After all, it only happens while you "drive the system with a laser".
